Q: Is it legal to install my own gas stove or appliance in South Africa?
A: No. In South Africa, it is strictly illegal to install any fixed gas appliance yourself. According to national safety regulations, all liquefied petroleum gas setups must be completed, pressure-tested, and certified by an SAQCC Gas-registered practitioner. A DIY installation instantly invalidates your home insurance policy and can lead to severe structural liability issues. The appliance Warranty become null and void.
Q: When is a Gas Certificate of Compliance (CoC) legally required?
A: A legal Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is required by law during any change of property ownership (selling a home or business). It is also mandatory for validating your building's insurance policy in the event of fire or accident claims. Furthermore, if you make any modifications, extensions, or repairs to your existing gas line network, a new CoC must be issued for the entire system.
Q: How long does a Gas CoC remain valid, and how often must a system be inspected?
A: Under the latest SANS 10087-1:2024 regulations, a fixed gas infrastructure layout must undergo a mandatory safety inspection at least once every 5 years to replace perishable seals or pigtail hoses. However, when selling a property, the existing certificate cannot simply be transferred over if it was issued for a prior transaction. A brand-new inspection and system sign-off are required to protect the incoming buyer.
